A recent job carried out by our engineers is a clear reminder that the lowest cost part is not always the lowest cost repair.
Our team was working on an Allison transmission that had developed an oil leak from the sump. During inspection, the transmission was found to have an aftermarket sump gasket fitted, along with an aftermarket filter.
Once the gasket had been removed, the difference between the aftermarket part and a genuine Allison Transmission gasket was clear.

Our engineers compared the removed aftermarket gasket with a genuine Allison Transmission gasket.
The genuine gasket measured approximately 4.43 mm thick.

That difference in thickness is significant for a component responsible for sealing the transmission oil sump. In this case, the thinner aftermarket gasket had failed to provide the correct seal, resulting in an oil leak.
The hidden cost of cheaper parts
Aftermarket parts can appear to offer a saving at the point of purchase, but that saving can quickly disappear if the part does not perform correctly.
In this case, the failed gasket meant further work was required to resolve the leak. That can lead to additional costs such as replacement parts, service labour, oil, consumables and vehicle or machine downtime.
